Ice Box, meanwhile, was steadied twice by jockey Jose Lezcano, who couldn’t steer clear of trouble in mid-stretch when the late runner was in full gallop. He still closed with determination to get second, 2 1/2 lengths behind Super Saver.

“At the half-mile pole he started running, but I didn’t want to go wide in a 20-horse field,” said Lezcano. “I had to check at the quarter-pole but he came again and made a big run.”

The official Equibase comment for Ice Box was “steadied, blocked, steadied.”

Even third-place place finisher Paddy O’Prado had excuses, according to jockey Kent Desormeaux.

“I got stopped cold at the quarter pole. If I got through I would have won,” he said. “He stumbled real bad at the sixteenth pole. He must have stepped in a hole. My horse, he ran his heart out, he just didn’t have the luck.”

Despite the bad weather, a crowd of 155,804 – the sixth-largest in track history – braved the elements. It marks the sixth straight year that the Kentucky Derby has drawn 153,000-plus on track.

Not only did Calvin Borel win an unprecedented third Kentucky Derby in four years, he moved into a tie for third for most all time – from just eight mounts. Ahead of him are Eddie Arcaro (five winners from 21 mounts), Bill Hartack (five from 12 mounts) and Bill Shoemaker (four from 26 mounts).

The sloppy track favored closers – even in the two turf races that were contested – until it was sealed just prior to the ninth race, when the seven-furlong Churchill Downs was held.

Borel took immediate advantage by going wire to wire aboard 10-1 Atta Boy Roy to win the Grade 2 sprint.

Glen Fullerton, who earned the right to make a $100,000 bet through a promotion by CNBC, bet it all on 8-1 Super Saver to win. He collected more than $900,000.
