Americans for Prosperity- Attack Group Funded By Big Tobacco and Big Oil! These Bastards Know How To Stoop Real Low!
Corporate Rights/Featured Idea
We are currently featuring principles that support amending the Constitution to address the severe flaws in the Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United. Here are core principles that grassroots groups and over 50,000 people have signed on to:
We, the People of the United States of America, reject the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Citizens United, and move to amend our Constitution to:
Firmly establish that money is not speech, and that human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights.
Guarantee the right to vote and to participate, and to have our vote and participation count.
Protect local communities, their economies, and democracies against illegitimate "preemption" actions by global, national, and state governments.

Dahlkemper blasts Americans for Prosperity TV ads
U.S. Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper of Erie issued the following response today to television ads critical of her, which are currently airing throughout the 3rd Congressional District:
Dahlkemper Responds to Ads Accusing Her of Being Soft on Cancer After Dahlkemper loses her parents to cancer, tobacco front group launches attack

Erie, Pa.—Today, Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper (PA-3) responded to deceiving attack television ads airing across Northwestern Pennsylvania. These latest attack ads are funded by a front group for big tobacco and oil called Americans for Prosperity. Given Rep. Dahlkemper lost both her parents to cancer within the last month, these ads sink to a new low as they question the Congresswoman’s commitment to preventative care and cancer screenings. At best, these ads are tasteless and misleading, and should be taken down immediately.
“These attacks from a Washington-based front group are false, tasteless, and shameful,” said Congresswoman Dahlkemper. “In the past month, I’ve lost both my parents to cancer. It’s truly disgraceful for outside groups to then attack me for not being tough enough on cancer.”
“Like millions of Americans, my family and I have lost loved ones to this horrible disease. This is personal for me; I’ve been a strong proponent of the Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation and the work they are doing to find a cure, and I’ve encouraged more cancer screenings, particularly for women. My record and dedication are clear.”
“I will always do what is best for Northwestern Pennsylvania, and these distortions won’t do a thing to change that commitment to my constituents,” Dahlkemper said. Americans for Prosperity is a front group for tobacco and oil companies.
“It’s disgusting that the partnership of tobacco and oil have targeted Congresswoman Dahlkemper only days after her parents passed away from cancer,” said Chief of Staff Tina Mengine.
As the mother of five, and the new grandmother of two, Dahlkemper has a personal commitment to family health, and has emerged as a new leader on preventative care and wellness. She made numerous contributions to the current health care reform bill, such as making it easier for young adults to stay on their parents’ insurance, and expanding coverage to fight obesity.
Contrary to the ads claims, Dahlkemper has also specifically tackled preventative cancer care. She has introduced and cosponsored legislation that would:
Encourage breast cancer screenings for women under age 50;
Recognize National Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day;
Recognize Cervical Health Awareness Month;
Raise awareness of ovarian cancer; and,
Raise awareness about women’s susceptibility to colorectal cancer.
“Americans for Prosperity doesn’t speak for the district,” said Mengine. “It’s a Washington-based mouthpiece for big tobacco and oil. Western Pennsylvanians should be offended by these ads; they are utterly false.”
Below is a list of cancer related legislation that Congresswoman Dahlkemper has sponsored or co-sponsored:
HR 109: Honoring the 20th anniversary of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in the Nation’s Capital and its transition to the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure on June 6, 2009, and for other purposes.
HR 158: Expressing support for the designation of an Early Detection Month for breast cancer and all forms of cancer.
HR 727: Expressing support for greater awareness of ovarian cancer.
HR 787: Expressing support for designation of October 13, 2009, as National Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day.
HR 971: Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives regarding guidelines for breast cancer screening for women ages 40 to 49.
HR 1011: Recognizing the importance of cervical health and of detecting cervical cancer during its earliest stages and supporting the goals and ideals of Cervical Health Awareness Month.
HR 1053: Recognizing that women are equally affected by colon cancer.
HR 1189: Colorectal Cancer, Prevention, Early Detection and Treatment Act of 2009.
HR 1691: Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act of 2009.
HR 1740: Breast Cancer Education and Awareness Requires Learning Young Act (EARLY) Act
HR 3962: Armed Forces Breast Cancer Research Act.

Shipboard Employment Opportunities
The U.S.-Flag Great Lakes fleet typically has a number of job openings during the shipping season. While many openings are "relief positions" (replacing regular crewmembers going on vacation), there are also permanent positions available in all ratings - entries, the qualified ratings (AB and QMED) and officers. Therefore, the length of employment could be several weeks or longer.
By law, no one may work on a U.S.-Flag commercial vessel without a Merchant Mariner's Document. For more information on obtaining an MMD, click here. Mariners already possessing a valid MMD (it must be renewed every five years), may contact the following individuals and organizations.
OFFICERS
The majority of U.S.-Flag Lakers are contracted with American Maritime Officers to supply licensed officers. Individuals possessing an Engine or Deck license should contact Phil Kelley (1-800-221-9395). Grand River Navigation Company is contracted with Masters, Mates and Pilots (MMP), but hires directly. Contact Rick Turman, Sr. (440-930-2024). MMP's contact is Charles Malue (216-776-1667). Marine Engineers' Beneficial Association (MEBA) represents officers on Interlake Steamship vessels. MEBA's Lakes' agent, Salvatore Zingales, can be contacted at (216) 579-6322.
UNLICENSED PERSONNEL
Some companies are contracted with the Seafarers’ International Union (SIU) for their unlicensed personnel. For more information, call (810) 794-4988.
The following companies are contracted with Steelworkers Local 5000, but hire unlicensed personnel directly.
Central Marine Logistics, Inc. – Lori Johnston (219) 922-2644 Great Lakes Fleet / Key Lakes, Inc. - 1-800-535-2321The Interlake Steamship Company – (800-327-3855, ext. 1140)Liberty Steamship Company (a subsidiary of American Steamship Company) - Mary Banks (800) 828-7230Grand River Navigation Company is contracted with Masters, Mates and Pilots (MMP), but hires directly. For employment opportunities with Lake Michigan Carferry, contact Laurie Bialochowski (231-843-1509).
Working in the marine industry is a rewarding career, but as with all professions, it has its unique demands. Great Lakes shipping IS NOT a 9 to 5 job. The ships operate constantly, stopping only long enough to load or discharge cargo. If the ship arrives in port at 0130 (1:30 a.m.), that’s when loading or unloading begins. Similarly, if loading/unloading finishes at 2300 (11 p.m.), the vessel is underway minutes later. Crewmembers are aboard ship for weeks on end, with only limited opportunities for going ashore. The pay is competitive and the food is good and plentiful. Meals and rooms are provided free of charge. All members of Lake Carriers’ Association are Equal Opportunity Employers.

Big Ships Prepare to Leave Erie
March 17, 2010, 4:29 pm
Two large ships that have been undergoing yearly winter maintenance here in Erie will sail out of the harbor on Friday. The Edgar Speer and the Presque Isle will head to Lake Superior to begin 10 months of hauling iron ore around the Great Lakes. Crews at Erie Sand and Gravel spent the past 2 months overhauling the engines, machinery, and doing preventative maintenance. John Thibodeau of the Great Lakes Fleet said, "We've been doing overhauls, repairing machinery and preventative maintenance as well as repairing stuff that is broken." The work has been a big boost for Erie Sand and Gravel. Tod Eagleton of Erie Sand and Gravel said, "If we didn't have this boat work we would probably have had to layoff 3 or 4 people. So we're able to keep our work force in place, and also bring on some temporary help. So it very certainly helps us and the local economy." Great Lakes shipping was down last year because of the recession. Officials are hoping for a turnaround this year. Eagleton said, "This year more vessels are actually going to be fitted out. But in the stone trade we're really not sure yet. It will play out. It is kind of a crap shoot."
